Stephen Kumalo

Stephen Kumalo is a man with an enormous personality. He can range from being caring to angry in a matter of pages. Kumalo is very realistic, character wise; by the way his life turns around even though it is not necessarily for the best. He did not know finding his son would lead to all of his troubles, but he never backed away.

Kumalo ranges in personalities enormously, in the book he shows personality traits of happiness, anxiety, fear, love, care, and faith. He shows fear mainly at the beginning and end of book one. Some examples of his fear would be when he is getting on the train to go to Johannesburg and when he finds out that Absalom ,his son, killed Arthur Jarvis. Stephen Kumalo makes the remark "And it is too late," when he finds his son, making me feel that he is afraid, scared, and feared for him.

Stephen Kumalo is a very realistic character, he has struggles just like everyone in the world; unlike in other books where the main character has no problems, but a perfect life. Stephen Kumalo starts off having struggles in life, his son, sister, and nephew have all went to Johannesburg looking for someone. Kumalo's family ,that went to Johannesburg, did not write to him, which made things harder on him. Towards the middle of book one we find Kumalo's sister ,Gertrude, in a bad state of living; she is a well known prostitute where she is from. This is bad news to Kumalo considering it is his sister, but more importantly that he is a man of God. Though finding his sister was bad news to him, finding his son was even worse on his mind and faith. When Kumalo found his son he started finding out more and more of what his son had been doing the years he was away from home, which was mainly getting into trouble. All of this not only makes Stephen Kumalo a realistic character ,by how he handled his situations and what his situations were, but also a strong, individual, loving character.

Stephen Kumalo has both positive and negative attributes that make up his personality; his positive attributes are that he is a strong, individual character that knows how to handle the toughest situations that can be thrown at a person. Though he has strong positive attributes he also has negative attributes; such as, his ability to not believe someone good be so bad, or when he started losing his faith over what Absalom did.

Stephen Kumalo has grown a lot as a person throughout his struggles in book one and part of book two. He has grown much in the way he views people, now instead of just seeing them he looks deeper, below the flesh. He does not just look at the person, he looks at the past of the person. Kumalo has grown much in his faith also; by starting to let it slip away to start praying that everything will be okay with Absalom and his sons girlfriend.
 

Life is Precious

I have only been in this world for a short fifteen years, but I still have a strong belief that life is important and precious. I cannot see how anyone would not want a new life around. Many people would not think that that they would take a life, but some will without realising it. Even though an abortion may not seem like you are killing a person, because they are not alive, it is.

In the world today life is even more beloved and special that it used to be. Some may be asking, why? It is because thousands of children die everyday from not being born, which could have been a new and astounding life.

This is why every one of us should be grateful of the life that we are gifted everyday! We all have those thought about how "life is so horrible" and "life is stupid" ,but what if you had your life taken away from you without your consent?

I know that my life was made for a purpose, as is everyone elses, I just have to find out what my purpose is! All of us have something we drive for that makes our lives worth living for everyday. Mine just so happens to be waking up every morning and breathing.

I know that life is not always what we would categorise s adored, but think about all the things you accomplish since you have a life. Everything you have done is an accomplishment because no one has done the same thing you have the same way. This is why our life should be so precious because it is never the same as any one elses.

Our lives may not all be the same ,but as I said earlier, they all have a purpose. For some, their purpose in life may be music, writing, teaching, learning, going to college, becoming famous, the list could go on and on because there are so many possibilities for a purpose in life. All of us should try to figure out what our purpose is because your life was given to you by your mother and God because they knew that your life was special and had a purpose. So for all of you that have yet to find your purpose, find it, it might just change your view on the things that are happening around you.

Vegetable Soup

Ingredients:

• 1 pound ground beef
• 1 can of tomato sauce
• 1 can of Hunts spaghetti sauce (garlic and herb)
• 1 package of frozen mixed vegetables
• 1 package of frozen okra and tomatoes
• cabbage to taste
• salt and pepper

Preparation:

 To start off your vegetable soup you need to gather all of of the ingredients: 1 pound of ground beef, 1 can of tomato sauce, 1 can of Hunts spaghetti sauce (garlic and herb), 1 packages of frozen mixed vegetables, 1 package of frozen okra and tomatoes, also cabbage, salt, and pepper for taste.

My mom always said food was good for the soul.

"Mama, why do we eat food?"

"Because child, food is good for the soul, and it can always make your day better."

My mother's vegetable soup is especially delicious and great for the soul. I always love when she cooks the soup, especially on cold nights. I always love sitting on the couch bundled up on cold nights smelling the aroma that fills the house. It is always such a pleasant smell when all the ingredients start coming together. But to actually smell the soup you need to make it.

First, you need to cook the ground beef until it is fully done. Next, you need to add all the ingredients into a large pot with enough water to let the vegetables cook. The vegetables should take about 1 hour to cook.

In the kitchen while everything is coming to a boil is fantastic. Walking by the pot of soup and feeling the warm steam hit your face is like stepping into a sauna. It makes you want to stand there forever just to feel the heat and smell all of the different smells. Well until it is done that is.

When everything is fully cooked, take the soup off of the heat and serve.

Now is the best thing about my mom cooking the soup, eating it! It is always great to get a big bowl out of the cabinet and pour the steaming, hot soup into it. When feeling the heat of the soup burning my tongue, in a good way that is, and tasting all the different flavors, it is like I went to Heaven. The soup its self if heavenly. Mama always said food is good for the soul, so this heavenly soup must be extremely good. Though, you will never know until you try it.

Think Assignment 2

                How would you feel if you saw a dead man float out of the sea? Would you be scared maybe even terrified? Well some people from the story, “The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, would literally start playing with them! Though the people were not adults, only young children looking for a new, unfamiliar face. The village they lived in only consisted of 20 houses, not many new faces come around, until the day he washed up. When some of the men finally saw the man on the beach they rushed over to carry him to a house, but when they tried to carry him they realized he was much heavier than anyone they knew. When the men got to a house to lay the man down they realized how long he was, he could not fit on the beds! Since the men could not recognize the man they decided to go to neighboring villages while the woman stayed and cleaned the man up for a peaceful death. Though when they started cleaning all the scales and mud off of this man they realized something, they realized that this man was the most handsome man they have ever seen. The woman started to make clothes for the man because he was too large for any clothes in the village. Though when they did the clothed were still too tight for him. The woman then started thinking how hard it was when he was alive to be so large if it was such a hassle when he is dead. They thought of how hard it was for him when he was visiting people, he would always have to stand up because of embarrassment of breaking the chair. When the woman took a good look at him and finally realized he was dead they started weeping because to them he had become Esteban.

                 The time finally came that they had to throw the body off of the cliff because there was no grave yard in the village. The woman could not make the time to throw the body off go away, so they stalled for as long as they could. Finally, one of the women took the handkerchief off of his face and the men were left breathless. If the man would have known how much trouble he was causing he would have drowned in a more deserted place. The men started to feel no hatred and gave the drowned man the best funeral there has been in the village. Women started gathering flowers for the drowned man. They gave the drowned man a peaceful going away to the heavens. 

Journal 1

Have you ever wondered what it was like to protest in prison? In this article someone was thinking about it. It is very hard to protest in prison, and the ones that try to protest know that they most likely will not win. Most prisoners will not protest for the risk of losing what little privileges they have. Such as: his jobs, his visits, his recreation time, his phone privileges, his right to buy tuna, ramen and stale bread at inflated prices in the commissary. On July 8 30,000 prisoners went on a hunger strike for better prison conditions. They went on this strike mainly for stopping solitary confinement for runaway punishment. Being locked in a room the size of a small bathroom for decades is said to be one of the cruelest punishments that there can be for a person. When you are in a confined room you lose all the connections from the world, you begin talking to yourself to give your mind something to do. The man that wrote this article used to count the steel that held his cell together, and when he felt like the walls were closing in on him he would count them again. It is a cruel punishment for any human to be locked away from the world,especially for trying to run away. That is why most prisoners are trying to protest against it, but it is getting harder because of the punishments they receive. If the prison officials do not understand why many inmates not affected by solitary confinement are on the strike then it is there fault that they are covered by their own censorship.
